The Turtle, the Pilot Fish, and the Big Race is a variation on Aesop’s fable of the race between the Tortoise and the Hare and is also an epic tale for smart parents with smart children. This book is illustrated with ingenious, colorful, detailed, and captivating classic works of art that inhabit the very souls of the various sea creatures in this tale.

This story is an imaginative exploration of love, environmental issues and enlightenment through struggle and courage. It is meant to be read out loud — and perhaps to even be discussed — by thoughtful parents with their children. Both the story and the art will sustain the attention of all those who are curious and intrigued by the complexity and beauty of life.

It follows the relationship and journey of the Green Sea Turtle, Rambi and Pilo, the Pilot Fish.

A Mighty Whale warns Rambi and Pilo that their home, a ring-shaped reef called an atoll, is dying. They are told of another reef in cooler waters where they must swim, but their path will be full of many dangers so they must be brave. However, Rambi is afraid to leave her home. Pilo hatches a plan to encourage Rambi and challenges her to a race to the new atoll. Confident she will win, Rambi accepts Pilo’s challenge and the two set off into deeper waters.

What will they find, and learn, along the way?

Author

Loren Lambert, a dreamer by disposition and a craftsman by discipline, has teamed up with Shakai Reyna to bring you the story of, “The Turtle, the Pilot Fish, and the Big Race,” an imaginative exploration of love, environmental issues, and enlightenment through struggle. He is so appreciative and blessed to collaborate with this amazing artist!

His greatest joy in life has been the privilege of guiding others in their life’s journey. He has done this, among other endeavors, as a Little League wrestling coach, as a river guide, as a father to his four precious children, as an acting coach and film-maker, as a lawyer assisting those struggling to navigate the laws and our tribunals, and as a volunteer legal professional for the Leavitt Institute of International Development.

He loves learning, adventuring, seeking beauty, and experiencing challenging situations that take him out of his comfort zone and allow him to grow as a fellow sojourner on this Earth. Best of all, he, like Shakai, finds the greatest fulfillment in creating, through imagination, works of art that inspire, entertain, enlighten, and enrich others’ lives.

Artist

Shakai Reyna, world sojourner, spiritual enthusiast, raised in the inter-mountain west, loves sharing her vision through artwork and teaching.

What she finds most meaningful is art that inspires wonder and thoughtful contemplation. She believes that through wonder, our eternal wisdom is revealed. In that spirit, this book’s story drove her to create greater depth to each illustration and she is confident it can now serve as a gateway to sparking wonder in the next generation to take action to aid and protect our vital sea life. After all, she urges, just as creation loves us unconditionally and provides us all we need, we must reflect back that same unconditional love. And whether we face the end or a new beginning, the light or the shadows, we must learn to meet both with love.
